Health Issues faced by BPO Employees - Health Fitness India
From http://www.trikal.org/ictbm11/pdf/OB/D1241-done.pdf
-----
Some of the health issues faced by BPO employees are:
Tension
Sleeplessness
Headaches
Eye-strain
Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
Voice loss, hearing problems and burn-out.
· Sleeping Disorders
One major severe ailment afflicting people working in Indian call centers is the sleeping disorder. Not only the freshers, even the experienced managers are unable to escape it. Some call centers are looking at devising innovative mechanisms like flexible shifts with sleeping arrangements in the office premises.
· Digestive System Related Problems
Working long hours and odd hours without any sleep, and eating food supplied by external caterers every day, has led to employees suffering from digestive disorders. Especially for the large number of girls working in the industry, the problem is even more severe. Many call centers are now taking additional care to ensure their caterers supply hygienic food; besides stipulating strict conditions to maintain the quality of the food they serve.
· Depression
The gradual realization that there are limited scopes in developing a career owing to fewer growth opportunities is increasing the frustration levels in the BPO industry. Coupled with growing mental fatigue and increasingly punishing physical environments, depression is the obvious end result. Some call centers have now devised different stress management programs mainly to counter depression.
· Eyesight Problems
Globally call center employees are considered a high risk group for eye related problems. While the quality of monitors might impact these disorders, sitting continually without adequate breaks seems to be the truerer reason. While this is already a problem in the IT industry, which some companies have overcome by use of anti-glare monitors.
· Hearing Ailments
A call center job invokes taking calls throughout the shift, sitting with headphones. While quality of headphones does make a difference, it would not be appropriate to say that good quality of headphones can solve this problem; it is more to do with giving rest between calls.
Cultural Shifts
Though on one side we learn to become as professional as western world executives some other disturbing issues are arising. One such serious issue is the personal habits that have undergone a considerable change.
The personal habits, discipline and behavioral issues and detachment with family have been discussed below.
· Personal Habits
The young executives tend to develop certain bad habits such as alcohol, smoking etc. It is not uncommon to find women smoking and drinking alcohol in the BPO setup which is definitely a social stigma in the Indian societies. There are increased concerns about the habits of the employees among the parents, who are not finding it easy to talk to them about their habits, which in no way are welcomed by the Indian families.
Solving such issues lies majorly in the hands of the employees and their employers. Employees can be made to attend counseling sessions of professional counselors. Conducting group counseling, workshops, educative film shows, in order to create awareness on effects of bad habits. Such actions will enable individuals to realize the importance of good habits and they could seek one-to-one counseling sessions.
· Discipline and Behavioral Issues
Call centers provide excellent working environment, free food and transportation. There is always a situation where individual or group of youngsters tend to commit mistakes and abuse the freedom. The most common behavior cited is misuse of food, behave erratically in vans, and smoke in public places, misuse of telephones and other resources of the company. The supervisors themselves reel under the pressure of performance and achieving targets. Hence do not give their time for finding solutions. The professional counselor can play a major role in educating the youngsters on discipline; provide advice to erring executives.
Unacceptable behaviors cause disturbance to others and affects the overall productivity. Continuous education and counseling will help to mitigate such problems and it is possible to change the behavior by adopting a positive approach.
· Detachment from the Family
Since the daytime is spent in sleep and recreational activities with friends. The employees are hardly able to give time for their families. Problems become more pronounced when they get married. Additional responsibilities of running a family demands more time and hence eventually people quit the industry. Most of the employees work on Indian holidays too, which causes frustration. Some employees even feel the need for inclusion in the family and the society. Hence it is important for family members to render support for their young sons and daughters and to help them with the stress that they are undergoing.
-----
Kindly note that minor health problems unchecked and not cared for can lead to major health problems. In this regard, all BPO employees should regularly visit doctors for general checkup and more as required.
I think that Genetics, Lifestyle and Environment determine a lot about how healthy and fit a life we would live. Research shows that the majority of people do not do the recommended levels of activity which has been putting people at a risk of a range of diseases. Activity has also been shown to reduce the chance of illnesses such as heart diseases, diabetes and some cancers. It can also help improve mental health. In this regard, I wish that the BPO employees do the best that they can to have the best health and fitness as possible while working in the BPO sector. I also wish that the Health and Fitness India network would be of value to them in this regard including towards uplifting the health and fitness of the masses.
I also think that the employers would do better with healthier and fitter employees and so the BPO employers should try to provide whatever that they can to their employees for their health and fitness.
Best,
Shakti

17 facts and myths about great skin
By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. "Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin," says dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, author of Simple Skin Beauty: Every Woman's Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy, Gorgeous Skin and associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells. Contrary to some claims, exercise doesn't detoxify the skin. The job of neutralizing toxins belongs mostly to the liver. "But by increasing blood flow, a bout of exercise helps flush cellular debris out of the system," Marmur tells WebMD. "You can think of it as cleansing your skin from the inside."
Exercise has also been shown to ease stress. "And by decreasing stress, some conditions that can be exacerbated by stress can show some improvement," says Brian B. Adams, MD, associate professor and director of the Sports Dermatology Clinic at the University of Cincinnati. Conditions that can improve when stress is reduced include acne and eczema. Although researchers are still investigating the link between stress and skin, studies show that the sebaceous glands, which produce oil in the skin, are influenced by stress hormones.

I was recently told by a very senior skin specialist to apply sunscreen when I go out in sun. I've applied sunscreen before but not regularly. So I thought of finding quality articles on sunscreen which I'm also sharing here for you in India and worldwide. Please note that I'll keep sharing related articles in the comments:

Sunscreens remain safe, effective form of sun protection
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (May 23, 2011) -
The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) today reiterated the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens to protect against the damaging effects from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. As one component of a daily sun-protection strategy, sunscreen is an important tool in the fight against skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Unprotected sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer. More than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, affecting 2 million people. At current rates, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime. About 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma, and the incidence of melanoma has been rising for at least 30 years.
“Scientific evidence supports the benefits of sunscreen usage to minimize short and long-term damage to the skin from UV radiation and outweighs any unproven claims of toxicity or human health hazard,” said Ronald L. Moy, MD, FAAD, president of the Academy.“To reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature aging, dermatologists continue to recommend generously applying a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen ― that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) ― with an SPF 30 or higher, in conjunction with other sun-safe practices such as limiting sun exposure, seeking shade, and wearing sun-protective clothing, hats and sunglasses.”
Sunscreen products contain one or more active drug ingredients -- compounds that absorb, scatter or reflect UV light -- and are regulated as over-the-counter (OTC) drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has several safety and effectiveness regulations in place that govern the manufacture and marketing of all sunscreen products, including safety data on its ingredients. However, recent media reports have questioned the health risks of some sunscreen ingredients, specifically oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate, as well as the use of nanotechnology in sunscreen.
Oxybenzone is one of the few FDA-approved ingredients that provides effective broad-spectrum protection from UV radiation, and has been approved for use since 1978. “Contrary to recent reports, available scientific literature and decades of public use does not support a link between oxybenzone in sunscreen and hormonal alterations, or other significant health issues in humans,” stated Dr. Moy. “The FDA has approved oxybenzone in sunscreen for use on children older than six months, and dermatologists continue to encourage protecting children by playing in the shade, wearing protective clothing and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen.”
Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A (retinol), but is not an active drug ingredient in sunscreen. When used in sunscreen, retinyl palmitate serves cosmetic purposes as an antioxidant to improve product performance against the aging effects of UV exposure, or to enhance product aesthetic qualities. Despite recent concerns from in vitro (test tube) studies and one unpublished report using mice, “topical and oral retinoids are widely prescribed to treat a number of skin diseases, such as acne and psoriasis, and there is no published evidence to suggest either increase the risk of skin cancer in these patients,” said Dr. Moy. “In fact, oral retinoids are used to prevent skin cancers in high-risk patients such as those who have undergone organ transplantation.” Dr. Moy also added that “unlike more potent prescription forms of vitamin A, there is no evidence to suggest that use of sunscreen with retinyl palmitate poses comparable risks.”
The broad-spectrum sunscreen active ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide leave a white residue on the skin following application when used in a larger particle form. However, when these active ingredients are converted into nanoparticles – smaller, lighter molecules – they appear to vanish on the skin, do not leave a residue, and retain and enhance their ability to block UVA and UVB light.
“While widespread use of nanotechnology in medicine is currently under evaluation, one of the main benefits of nanoparticles in sunscreens is that the small molecules can provide more protection and more even coverage on the skin’s surface than larger particles,” said Dr. Moy. “Considerable research on the use of nanoparticles on healthy, undamaged skin has shown that the stratum corneum – the outermost layer of the skin – is an effective barrier to preventing the entry of nanoparticles into the deeper layers of the skin. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have a long history of safe use in sunscreens and offer good options for broad-spectrum UV protection.”
There has also been concern that sunscreen use prevents the synthesis of vitamin D by the skin. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is vital for strong bones and a healthy immune system. The Academy recommends that an adequate amount of vitamin D should be safely obtained from a healthy diet that includes foods naturally rich in vitamin D (e.g., dairy products and fish), foods/beverages fortified with vitamin D (e.g., fortified milk and fortified cereals), and/or vitamin D supplements -- and not from UV exposure. The Academy recently updated its position statement on vitamin D based on the published review of the increasing body of scientific literature on this vitamin conducted by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM).
“Unprotected UV exposure to the sun or indoor tanning devices is a known risk factor for the development of skin cancer. Since sun exposure is responsible for vitamin D production in the skin, wearing sunscreen can decrease the skin's production of vitamin D, but alternative and safer options are available to obtain your vitamin D,” states Dr. Moy. “Individuals who properly and consistently wear sunscreen or use other UV protective measures, and are concerned about their vitamin D, should discuss obtaining sufficient vitamin D from foods and/or vitamin supplements with their doctor.”
The FDA is continuing to work on addressing requirements for UVA coverage in sunscreens and considering sunscreen labeling changes to help the public make knowledgeable decisions about protecting themselves from the dangers of sun exposure. “Dermatologists recommend the use of broad-spectrum sunscreen products to protect against UVA and UVB rays and we rely on the FDA to confirm the safety of the products,” said Dr. Moy. The American Academy of Dermatology currently awaits the FDA’s final ruling to provide the most current information.
“Despite any concerns over the use of sunscreen, they are an important component of a daily protection plan, as dermatologists understand the limitations of clothing and minimizing sun exposure. There are many sunscreen products available that meet the Academy’s recommendations, and consumers need to be comfortable with their choice of product in order to use it routinely”, Dr. Moy added. “Since allergic and other reactions can occur, individuals should read the product’s labeling carefully, use as directed, and seek the advice of their dermatologist in using sunscreens and any product applied to the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology will continue to monitor scientific evidence related to sunscreen ingredients and their effectiveness to help guide patients and the public.”

Rippling biceps, toned abs and a perfect Y-figure –without a shred of doubt, this is the latest fashion statement among Indian youths. This fitness trend started almost a decade ago, influenced by Salman Khan and his ilk flaunting bare chests on the silver screen, and you know the rest is history. It was then when the youth from every nook and corner of the country started hitting gyms, spending long hours working out and putting in their best effort to sculpt a fit, toned body that they can flaunt.
While some may consider flabby bellies among men a symbol of prosperity and happiness, and since obesity is rampant, the obsession for a well built physique certainly increased overall awareness for health and fitness. However, experts warn that poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warm-up and stretching prior to exercise could lead to serious health issues, especially in the vertebral column.
“Unfortunately, young people do not pay heed to such advices, until they actually start experiencing serious health complications,” says Dr. Puneet Girdhar Consultant-Spine, Orthopaedics & Joint Reconstruction from BLK Hospital.
Like 36 year-old Neeraj Mehra, an engineer by profession, caring husband and loving father, who always managed to squeeze out a couple of hours for his daily workout, but having been diagnosed with problem in his spine had to eventually stop exercising completely.
This is not an isolated case; experts warn that with increasing tendency to go for untrained and inappropriate workouts, rise in sports injuries- a term used to differentiate musculoskeletal problems springing up due to vigorous physical training, is quite likely.
“While an appropriate amount of physical activity is recommended to keep various physiological functions going smoothly, its excess could certainly lead to back problems. The spine is a column of 33 vertebrae, which are kept in place with spongy inter-vertebral discs and ligaments, and too much or incorrect exertion can disrupt this delicate column, and result in serious injuries,” says Dr. Puneet Girdhar.
Focussing on the facts, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states that apart from normal ageing and sedentary lifestyle, most of the people between the age group of 30 to 50 years suffer from back problem due to excessive and strenuous work outs.
“Herniated and slipped disc is quite a common problem which could result from strenuous physical activity. While medication could manage a mild condition, for serious situations surgical intervention might be required,” adds Dr Girdhar
Herniated disc develops when one (or more) of inter-vertebral discs rupture, pushing out a jelly-like fluid, due to intense back strain. This leaked fluid initially irritates nearby nerves, eventually extending to nerve compressions which leads to numbness and severe pain in the concerned body part, especially legs, if it is associated with low back pain. Young age of the patients and their necessity to be active calls for such medical interventions which could restore fitness.
However, until sometime back, surgeries in spine treatment required the entire back to be slit open, putting a lot of people off, but thanks to the technological advancements in treatment modalities, which seem all geared up to put an end to the ordeal of patients suffering.
Treatment using MinimalAccess Spinal Technologies (MAST) is one such advent which helps surgically treating disorders of the spine with least disruption caused to the muscles. This can result in quicker recovery, decrease operative blood loss, and speed up the patient’s return to normal functions.
This surgery is very different from the earlier procedure which required the entire back to be slit open. MAST treatment can be done by making two or three small openings and the patient can return to his normal routine soon after recovery.
In some MAST approaches, also called “keyhole surgeries,” surgeons use a tiny endoscope with a camera on the end, which is inserted through a small incision in the skin. The camera provides surgeons with an inside view, enabling surgical access to the affected area of the spine.
The highly innovative cutting-edge equipment used in this form of surgery not only makes MAST feasible but also bring in an element of efficacy to the entire procedure, with as little disruption to the surrounding muscles, nerves and other soft tissues as possible which ensures that visible effect on the skin are as trifling as possible.
“Considering that MAST treatment restores almost complete spine functions and ensures speedy recovery, it is ideal for people who are comparatively younger and cannot afford to be left out from regular activities as retired persons can,” says Dr. Puneet Girdhar
While awareness would continue to playmajor role in helping people avoid conditions developing due to excessive exercise, advanced surgical options could help people suffering from spine problems, resume their normal routine.
Do you sometimes loose control of urine before reaching the toilet? Or are you someone who indulges in ‘toilet-mapping” (looking out for a toilet in a public place before starting your errands). Or do you have to visit the loo several times in between a movie? Do you sometimes have to use a pad to manage urine leaks?
If yes, you are one of those who suffers from Overactive Bladder also known as Urgency incontinence
People suffering from UI often have to face the embarrassing situation of involuntary and uncontrolled leakage of urine in public places.
“Over active bladder is not at all a rare problem. Rather, with the growing elderly population it is becoming more common. However, due to a particular mindset that there's no remedy for this medical condition, unfortunately people often keep enduring the immense physical and psychological trauma,” says Dr. Sanjay Gogoi, Director Urology & Renal Transplantation, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon
UI, a very under-diagnosed and under-reported problem, is more a disease than a physical complication. The psychological ordeal it gives to the patient is beyond comprehension of those who are fortunate enough not to face this situation. People suffering from this problem often tend to seclude themselves from social and other gatherings, for fear of losing control over their bladder at the slightest instance.
While, UI has been noted to be a major barrier to social interests, entertainment or physical recreation for the people suffering from it, depression and poor quality of life are its obvious implications.
There are different types of overactive bladder:
- Frequent urges to urinate (urgency-frequency)
- Inability to hold urine/leaking (urge incontinence)
A research published in Pub Med estimated that UI impacts 15 to 35% of the adult ambulatory population of 60 years and above, with prevalence rates among women being twice that of men.
In a hospital-based survey conducted in the year 2007, it was found that out of 3,000 women attending gynecology OPD (Out Patient Department) of the hospital, 656 were suffering from UI (which is 21.8% of the women visiting the gynecology department of the hospital).
Despite being very common, the disease is seldom registered due to social awkwardness linked to it, especially in case of women patients. With technology getting advanced and human physiology getting more explored, UI has become a treatable problem. Initially they are treated with behavioural therapy like bladder training, dietary modifications and pelvic floor exercises. Non-responders are treated with drugs, which although effective, have high drop outs because of side effects like constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth etc.
A minimally invasive surgical options like InterStim therapy is a recent and efficient treatment option to address this condition. Interstim, also termed sacral neuro modulation, involves the subcutaneous implantation of a programmable stimulator (similar to a cardiac pacemaker) which delivers low amplitude electrical stimulation to the nerves controlling the urinary bladder (sacral nerve). The U.S.FDA has approved InterStim Therapy, as a safe sacral nerve stimulator for treatment of Urinary Urge Incontinence, Urinary Frequency, and Urinary Retention.
InterStim is a proven long-term solution and more than 150,000 patients, world over have benefitted from it. InterStim therapy also provides an option to test it first before the patient makes the decision to get the implant. Patients can experience the therapy benefits and then decide if this is the right therapy for them in the test phase. For this an electrode (tined lead), is placed in the tail bone (sacrum), under local anesthesia. The external end of the wire is connected to a temporary external pulse generator. The device is activated and patient tries it out for 1–2 weeks. If the person’s symptoms improve by more than 50%, Interstim pulse generator is implanted under the skin in the region of the hip.
Explaining the InterStim technology Dr. Sanjay Gogoi says, “The sacral nerves control the bladder and muscles related to the urinary function. If the brain and sacral nerves don’t communicate correctly, the nerves will not tell the bladder to function properly, which can cause bladder control problems. InterStim Therapy modulates the sacral nerves with mild electrical pulses. This helps the brain and the nerves to communicate so the bladder and related muscles can function properly.”

Deep Brain Stimulation therapy offers hope for those unresponsive to medication
Epilepsy has long been a neurological condition in which the person afflicted has been looked upon in a different light. Long back when medical research was in its infancy, epileptic seizures were looked as demonic possession. As it later emerged, epilepsy is caused by sudden surges in the electrical signals in the brain. Epilepsy happens to be the fourth most common disorder which affects people of all ages. Characterized by unpredictable seizures, epilepsy seizures manifests itself with varying intensity and types among people.
Asha, 23, has been living with epilepsy for the past 4 years and feels insecure to venture out to parties late in the night. Even her parents are worried to send her unaccompanied to educational tours or even to a friend’s place. Diagnosed when she was in her second year of Mass Media Graduate program, she missed an exam due to violent seizures. “We saw Asha’s personality withering right in front of us. She transformed from a happy-go-lucky girl to being extremely careful and under confident. She even fared badly in her campus interviews”, says a disheartened Mercy Agnes, Asha’s mother. The seizures may result due to hereditary tendency, brain injury,
congenital brain injury, brain tumours among many but mostly it is unexplained. Many a times, the condition is termed as seizure disorders as the epilepsy sounds foreboding and being diagnosed as
epilepsy is stigmatized .
Asha was put on antiepileptic medication almost immediately considering she was just a student However, she faced serious problems after consuming the medications. Despite multiple medicines, she continues to have seizures on a regular basis. On another occasion, her mother says, “She started complaining of stomach ache and dizziness almost every day. Considering it was a part of the treatment, we ignored it. Then she contracted malaria and had to be hospitalized”. Upon investigation it was revealed that Asha’s white blood cell count had drastically reduced which made her susceptible to infection and delayed recovery. Asha’s doctor immediately stopped her medication and her condition improved .
Dr. Aditya Gupta, Head of Functional Neurosurgery with Medanta hospital says, “Some of the antiepileptic drugs are associated with certain level of toxicity and adverse reactions are often encountered. Since seizure medications lower excitability of nerve cells in the brain, it can also affect the normal brain activity. Cognitive functions like thinking, memory and attention span are likely to be affected when multiple antiepilepsy drugs are used” .
When her doctor introduced deep brain stimulation as a solution, they gave it serious thought. The medications on one hand were toxic, and on the other, were not making her free from seizures. Their confidence was boosted when Asha was free of epileptic fits six months after the surgery. It has been a year now and Asha leads a normal life.
Talking of this novel surgery, Dr Aditya Gupta of Medanta hospital says, “Those who have not gained control of seizures with multiple medications, and are not suitable for the usual kind of epilepsy surgery wherein the seizure focus is removed from the brain, have tremendous hope of a normal life with deep brain stimulation surgery. With stellar success rates in UK and US, many can benefit from this highly effective and safe treatment option”.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy involves placing electrodes in the anterior thalamus of the brain. These electrodes block the pathway of signals that causes epileptic seizures in hands and feet. DBS surgery involves fitting a DBS system in the brain which has mainly three parts:
A lead – It is a thin, insulated wire which is inserted through a small opening in the skull, and placed in the part of brain where the epileptic activity happens.
An extension – it is an insulated wire that passes under the skin of the head, neck, and shoulder, and connects the lead to the neuro-stimulator.
A neuro-stimulator/pulse generator – It is a small device, similar to a heart pacemaker and is usually placed under the skin near the collarbone. It contains a small battery and computer chip programmed to send electrical pulses to control symptoms. Depending on use, the stimulators may last three to five years and their replacement procedure is relatively simple. An MRI or CT scan is done before the surgery to guide the placement of electrodes. The doctor then places the DBS system in that part of the brain. Once in place, electrical impulses are transmitted from the neuro-stimulator, along the extension wire and lead to stimulate the part of the brain.
Dr Aditya Gupta adds, “DBS surgery is a safe and highly effective therapy which has benefitted all my patients that were chosen for this modality. The awareness regarding this new procedure in india is very poor. Novel treatment modalities are now available to
improve an epilepsy patient’s quality of life and must be explored”.
How to Lose/Reduce Weight
By Life Coach Jasmin Waldmann
Tight trousers, muffin top belly, and the arms that feel, encased in the shirt.
Looking at you in the trial room is not a pleasant experience anymore. In fact you even start resenting the mirror or rather the picture it presents.
The immediate outcome is depression, followed by a rising resolve that you will do something, this time.
But the feeling is temporary and slides off the mantle till yet another mirror or dress trial slaps reality back on to your face.
So how do you resolve this perennial problem of losing weight, a thought that always lingers at the back of your mind? And how often do you actually think about it, seriously?
Come to think of it, if you made a penny every time the thought arose, you would be exceedingly rich.
But lets get back to our topic in hand, losing weight.
Actually to talk about losing weight is to in effect talk about losing our stored excess energy.
There is a saying in Europe: Use it or lose it! Simple. Ha-ha, I know, but not so easy.
So how do you get rid of your excess pounds? Lets examine some popular options:
1. It can´t be done by force – We are all familiar with clichés like; from now onward I’ll go to the gym everyday, I’ll follow the XYZ diet, I’ll go for a run every day, I’ll stop drinking and so forth.
But how many of the above, take their resolve seriously. And how many of them have you seen failing after a few days or weeks? And how often have you failed?
Please reflect and be honest! Frankly speaking, I guess quite often or until now, always.
I know, it is not a comfortable feeling and even the memory makes you feel weak or powerless.
But you need not feel embarrassed at your apparent lack of will. Out of 1000 people, there is generally one who has tried something else (we´ll come to this point in a short while) and not because she or he knew it, but by pure chance. All others usually fail. This is because we can´t force any long-term changes in our body merely by conscious will. Before we know it, we slip back into our old patterns and the pounds come piling back.
So let us conclude, that this method of forcing ourselves is definitely not going to work.
2. Plastic surgery will not last forever - It is a fact. Lets say the first few months after a successful plastic surgery to remove your belly fat, everything seems fine. In fact you look good and feel good.
Talking about the risk you take with plastic surgery is altogether another topic of discussion. So let´s say you thought about going in for liposuction, did it and survived. Furthermore – the results are great. No more fat around your belly. No more muffin top whenever you don your favourite pair of skinny jeans. Life is once again beautiful. But after a few months, you start to notice a little fat on your stomach. And slowly and steadily, you slip back into your old weight. You have heard stories about this happening very often. Maybe you have even experienced it in real life. We’ll come back to the source of the fat-comeback in a while.
Let´s face it; Number two option is a damp squib as well.
3. Personal Trainers can’t lose it for you – After failing with your own gym performance (yes, of course there have been Trainers on the floor, but at the end of a long and tiring gym day, they haven´t been a great help either), and your endless diet experiments, you decide to look online for some serious professional support. Of course there is some money involved “but if she or he kicks my butt, why not! “
So you go online and find a Trainer. The trainer comes to your house 3 times a week. In the beginning you feel super good. You even brag about it to your friends. But after 4-5 weeks, your body starts getting used to the routine and becoming lazy again. Also your nutrition is still not all that great, regardless of what your Trainer suggests. Somehow you just can´t seem to follow it.
So after the initial euphoria of losing a few pounds, you come back to the same body, you started with.
So option 3 too does not seem like a long-term solution.
After many of these futile experiments, you feel tired, worn out and super frustrated. Then you probably run into an article telling you to celebrate your body and simply accept the way you are. And after an initial hesitation, you convince yourself for some time that your body is great as it is. But then you see your friend or colleague prancing about in a hot outfit and a hotter body, you are back in misery land again.
But don’t worry. There is good news. Thankfully, we have many paths to reach our destination or goal of getting a fitter and leaner you.
I am talking about real goals and not about some hazy dreams.
Once you have made up your mind about your goal, the next step is to manifest that goal.
But first let us understand why the above 3 paths did not work.
Way number 1 can´t work … since once you release your mind even a little, (meaning doing things by force) your subconscious mind takes over. To state a fact, we human beings function with our conscious mind only approx. 10 %; the rest of all our doings comes from our subconscious (50-60%) & unconscious (30-40%) mind.
(The latter numbers source: http://www.mindset-habits.com/conscious-subconscious-unconscious-mind/)
To put the unconscious and subconscious together – these are the actual power centre: a complex and automatic system.
This part of our brain therefore is the most important part to start with and it is most important part to end with as well.
Now coming back to our 2nd option; plastic surgery. Maintaining a great body after a plastic surgery doesn't work since your eating habits and lifestyle have not changed at all. End result; we simply fill up our empty fat cells all over again and resume our old weight.
Last but not least way number 3 can´t work either. Because at the end of the day, nobody can do the work for you. Even if you have a brilliant Personal Trainer- let´s assume the good results will only last so long as you strictly follow (again by force) a fitness and diet regime. The moment you leave, (for any reason) you come hurtling back to the point you started from or worse.
The reason is – I guess you have now a clue – that nothing really changes in your mind-set.
The solution; targeted approach
It will be simple but not easy. There are few steps to your desires.
* First you need to set an exact target.
* The next step is to split that target into monthly targets, and then into weekly targets. Once you have set your major target, then you can forget about the big picture and concentrate only on the set small targets.
* If you have a good plan, then the next step is to mobilize the right kind of people around you (I call it your support system: one professional plus your loved ones). The rest is up to your discipline then. Step by step, you´ll steadily make progress and reach your target. At least in theory. But what really separates theory from practice is one critical step. But for this step, everything else can function in the same way.
The real magic comes from a different corner, from your mind. The kinds of thoughts you carry in your mind are the crucial part of all your doings.
Once your mind set is clear, you know how you think, how to lead your thoughts and emotions, then you are almost there.
But understanding you, or rather knowing yourself is the trickiest part on earth.
That’s why you should get the right professional person to guide you. It doesn't mean you will be successful only then. But you´ll reach much faster than if you do it on your own watch and also much more comfortably.
Be aware: losing weight starts with something else…
Let’s assume you hired a very good Coach who is able to support you holistically.
The Coach will start by asking you questions about your body, your state of mind, and your lifestyle. He or she will not start by giving you directions and orders on what you have to do.
Questions like: Why do you have too many pounds on your ribs right now? How did you start to gain weight? What stresses you out? How do you usually motivate yourself? What knocks you down? What thoughts do you have when you feel great, or when you feel depressed? How did they start? And many more…
Questions like these may seem odd to you and probably not directly related to your weight gain.
But they carry an imprint of your state of mind, which is closely related to your body and can have long term implications. This is the process of how a good coach gently starts to work on your body and avoids making any abrupt, forceful changes. This is what I call: Going straight to the source. When we look at fitness activities and nutrition, we talk about a very practical and of course, necessary step. I call it ‘action’: working against symptoms which aren't liked anymore (being overweight}.
In general, I can summarize that the way is really easy if you have the right guidance with you. Choose carefully. Always check with your reasoning if it makes sense. If yes, then simply obey and let go. Ensure that you follow all the recommended exercises & diet. That means once you have a plan you need to follow it strictly. But take the first steps, very slowly and carefully. The slower you begin, the faster you will reach, for sure.
In that way, you take baby steps and enjoy each one thoroughly.
Ciao and much love, Ja.Wa.

God, I don't understand but I think what's important is that you do.
A friend told me today that she wasn't able to sleep last night and was having a headache today. She has had sleeping issues for years. I wish her best.
During gym, I thought that I would share with her what I've been doing for many years since when I went to USA for college.
This has been my prayer for around fifteen years which I've started to do since years: "Om, sare bhagwano ki jai, baba amma ki jai, Om." (Om, Praise to all Gods, Praise to father mother, Om.) In my prayer, baba amma started Ramashram Satsang in Mathura and are spiritual gurus of my family since my great grandfather's times. I've read several of their books and I find those books human. Our baba has mentioned about the progress of USA due to how the people are generally there.
There have been times when I've repeated this in my mind several times before sleeping. Generally, I say this sometimes but I say this everyday before going to sleep. I've found that I almost always sleep well and generally fall asleep right after closing my eyes. I also pray to the universe to give me energy which is a part of my meditation practice which is a modified version of what baba created. Generally I also say "Mujhe bal buddhi vidya deejiye. Main balwan buddhiman vidwan banu." after saying the above.
Since some years, I also daily say "Bhagwan mujhe pyaar deejiye, meri raksha kariye, mujh par daya kariye, mujhe shama keejiye". I started saying this after I learned about Chanakya neeti and somehow felt that it could also lead to people doing something negative unless the best people are applying the same. I kept feeling this and someday I got thought of pyaar (love), raksha (protection), daya (kindness) and shama (forgiveness) as my principles and my requests to God.
I'm sharing this because when I thought of sharing my prayer with my friend, I realized that I didn't have my phone with me. It was on my mind and after leaving the gym, a security guard at the mall came to me and asked me what was in his hand. I saw that it was a pepper spray generally used by women for self-defense and told him the same. He had sprayed it in his eyes while opening it and so I told him to wash his eyes which he had already done. I asked him where he found it and he showed me a car and said that some girls had come out of it. I told him to return it to them because they might not realize that it's not with them and then if they need it then they wouldn't have it.
I asked him his name and he said Om Singh and that made me think of sharing the above with everyone. Before starting college, I had attended a community college for a semester while I was staying with my uncle in USA. I used to make swastika and sometimes also Om on my answer sheets and my uncle was informed from college about it and my uncle had shared with me that swastika might be taken as related to Hitler. Since then I had stopped making it on my answer sheets. I was highly grateful to my uncle and the community college to had given me world class opportunity to learn and experience life in USA. Om, sare bhagwano ki jai, baba amma ki jai, Om.
Several years ago, my grandmother (dad's mom) had given me a mantra:
asato mā sad gamaya (From ignorance lead me to truth)
tamaso mā jyotir gamaya (From darkness lead me to light)
mṛtyor mā amṛtaṁ gamaya (From death lead me to immortality)
The above is also used at the end of 3rd Matrix movie. The 1st Matrix movie had released the 1st year of my college and I had watched it then. Amazing is that my dad had visited me for a few days then and I had asked him to go with me for the movie. Now I remember that when I was going to Canada for Masters (I withdrew from the program after few months due to personal reasons even though the college was great in general), I had visited my dad in Hyderabad from Delhi due to a friend's wedding and I had asked him to go with me for the Dark Knight movie which had released then.
A classmate in Canada had asked me who I missed in India and I had said my grandmother (dad's mom). When I returned to Hyderabad, I saw her very ill and I asked family to take her to hospital and she passed away after some months. It was a blessing that I was with her then. She had Alzheimer but when I returned and asked who I was, she said my name. Recently, when an aunt said that someday she'll be old and who'll take care of her because they want to send their son to USA then I said that she has another son. I wish I'll be there for them as needed.
I wish people would realize that along with everything we do for ourselves, our family, our society and our world are also a part of us. I think that it's not about distributing equally but about enabling equal opportunity. Also, I wish that people in general would realize that rather than producing and bringing up children who'll live average and even miserable lives, have only so many children for whom the parents can provide good to great opportunities for them to maximize their human potential.
Moreover, it's a blessing that today I'm sharing the above: Today is Navratri dedicated to the glorification of Shakti, the feminine form of the Divine. During these nine nights, the mother goddess is worshiped in nine different forms. Navratri culminates on the 10th day with the festivities of Vijayadasham, also known as Dusshera. It celebrates the triumph of good over evil. One of my companies is named Shachi Health Fitness India Pvt. Ltd. and Shachi is one of mother Goddesses who's the beautiful and powerful one. I wish more and more people in India and our world would get value from www.healthfitnessindia.com. I had to stop it some years ago because of expenses, however, after Nirbhaya case in Delhi, I decided to bring it up again. Today I thought of sharing my prayer with my friend and a guard showed me a pepper spray which had possibly fell from a girl. I wish she'll get it back and be increasingly prepared to fight and defend herself. Someday I wish to also contribute to enabling women with arms including required training.
I've no issues with being commercial and building and growing the most successful company possible, however, sometimes it seems that people are only commercial and lack purpose for doing that work. I've shared with a variety of senior people to do something increasingly well for self-defense for people, however, it seems that due to their negative experiences that they've been distancing away from a purpose even though the commercial aspect does interest them. I feel that such people might even contribute at some level but wouldn't achieve top level greatness in that work. Of course, even if they can contribute lesser, it's much better than not contributing at all and then there are people who are even worsening us and our future generations.
I generally don't celebrate festivals in strictly religious ways, however, I respect them. I've started to feel that when we believe in God then we're always in prayer. I do a variety of things as human which might not conform to the different religious groups in our world. However, I think that when we're not hurting and harming others negatively while pursuing our interests then we're conforming to humanity and which I believe would be acceptable by God.
---I apologize up front if I'm unable to respond to any comments because of time. If you find my post of value then please also share it with other people to possibly also benefit them. Thank You! Best Wishes! Shakti
I've also shared the above in my LinkedIn article
Someone asked about my advertising work's deliverables including with numbers.
Then I realized I should stop/remove the things which I've been doing for that person in goodwill and when I can then come up with a newer quotation (most likely much higher than the first one) to include much more specifically the value that I would deliver and also mention the things I did as goodwill as part of deliverables. I think as business, it would be acceptable by this person to receive as per quotation and nothing less or more. I wish this person the best!
My initial advertising work proposal PDF for this person includes:
Hi ,
Thank You for letting me share my advertising proposal for you.
I'm sure you realize that advertising has to keep going on to retain and grow clients.
Moreover, the advertising expense needs to be appropriate to the expected revenues.
I have a large and growing social and professional network through LinkedIn, Google+ and Facebook. I have over 3000 connections on LinkedIn several of who are Directors, VPs, Owners and Senior Professionals including in Delhi area and which is growing.
I have created a variety of increasingly valuable sites including www.healthfitnessindia.com , www.healthfitnessindia.in , www.spasandsalonsindia.com , www.careerpartner.in , www.fashiondesignersindia.com (launched few days ago) , www.umbrasecurity.com and others.
I'm launching two e-Commerce sites this month, one in India (local market for now in Delhi area) and another in USA (global market).
My sites are indexed increasingly well by the search engines and several of my site pages come on the 1st page of search engines. This helps me to keep growing my audiences.
To do your advertising work, I suggest doing these things:
1. Share in relevant Facebook groups including those related to the class/workshop locations
2. Share through my LinkedIn, Google+ and Facebook profiles, pages and groups
3. Share through my sites in different ways
My above efforts can get you a growing online presence for the short to long term and which should increasingly help you in retaining and growing clients.
My fees for the next 6 months will be only 1500 INR per month which is about 50 INR per day. I would say that this will be one of your best investments for your work. As you'll get value from my efforts and would want more then I would offer more valuable ideas to you.
I suggest that you start for one month with me and if for any reason that you aren't satisfied then you can discontinue my service. If you're ready to start then I'll message you my bank details. I look forward to being of increasing value to you.
Best Regards,
Shakti

Hi All,
I'd like to thank Ms. Vani Pahwa to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:
1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?
I have been an Indian Classical dancer since childhood and always been a physically active person. My passion for dance and physical activity always ran parallel to my career in IT. A couple of bad injuries, being told more cons than pros by "experts" led me to begin my study of the field of anatomy and fitness in detail. It was a natural culmination of my desire to beat the odds and be better informed. I guess my ability to do this for myself lead me to offer it in an effective manner to those around and here I am. Still learning and growing...
2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?
Master Instructor with Evidence Based Fitness academy
Barefoot Training Specialist
BOSU Certified Personal Trainer
ACE (American Council on Exercise) Personal Trainer Metabolic & Functional Training
Vibro Gym Trainer
Reebok Aerobics
Reebok Step Program
Basic Life Support Provider (American Heart Association
I deal with a wide variety of clientele - sports persons, people with general fitness and weight issues, chronic ailments and people needing rehab. I work in conjunction with their doctors. I deal with all age groups - from kids to the old population.
3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?
It's for the client to say how great they feel my advise is :D
But I do tell most of them at some point or the other, "Whether you think you can, or you think can't, you are right". Everything one does is successful to the extent the mind and body are in sync. This holds true for just about anything and not limited to "holistic workouts".
4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?
I think one of the major mistakes that any fitness professional can make is to think one size fits all. The human body is a complex thing and should be treated with respect. The value of continued education and keeping up with research in the field cannot be over estimated. Bring knowledge and integrity in what you do. Always be willing to learn . Experience cannot be short circuited. Learn and respect the fact that "fitness" means different things to different people.
5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?
Learning and always reinventing myself and bringing all of that to my clients. Using my growing personal experiences to keep presenting evolving and more mature health and fitness solutions.

Hi All,
I'd like to thank Ms. Pragya Bhatt to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:
1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?
I started practicing yoga to lose weight. But then I realized that I wanted to spend time exploring all the different facets of the practice. I felt my full time job was getting in the way. So I resigned and decided to follow my passion.
2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?
I'm trained in Hatha yoga and Iyengar yoga. I conduct high-variation, high intensity sessions designed to lose weight and increase your fitness levels. I concentrate on rhythmic movements combined with alignment to ensure that the body becomes balanced and more flexible.
3. What's a great piece of advise that you've given to a client?
I always advise my clients to integrate yoga into their regular workout routines. Yoga is beneficial not only at a physical level but also at a mental level. There's a huge difference between the bodies of body builders and pro athletes. You'll find that athletes have a more balanced approach to fitness and most athletes practice yoga a couple of times a week.
4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?
Fitness professionals fall into a rut. They either don't find time or don't find the need to increase their knowledge. Also, I advise instructors to practice what they preach.
5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?
I see myself involved more deeply with my practice. And I see my students benefiting from my practice and my study.

Hi All,
I'd like to thank Dr. Emily Splichal to consent for the interview with the Health and Fitness India network. Our Q&A are as follows:
1. Why did you decide to enter the fitness industry?
I entered the fitness industry over 13 year ago when I was a crossroads with what I wanted to do with my life. My undergraduate degree is in Forensic Science which I soon realized was not my dream job.
Growing up I trained as a competitive gymnast, so movement was a natural part of my lifestyle. I started to explore careers in fitness / sports and I realized that this was where I was most passionate.
2. What are your specialties as a fitness professional?
Over the years I have shifted away from hands on training / teaching to more fitness education and program development. After attending medical school and graduate school I decided to apply both of these degrees towards the research and education side of fitness.
I still teach classes and have developed a workout called BARE® which is a barefoot balance training and conditioning workout. This workout is now taught across the USA and Internationally, teaching members the power of barefoot training.
Despite being a Doctor, I think it is important for me to maintain my involvement as a fitness professional. My Certifications include: NSCA-CPT, NASM-CES, NASM-PES, AFAA-Group Fitness, Johnny G Spinning, Rocktape-C, TP Therapy-C
3. What's a great piece of advice that you've given to a client?
Wow this is a hard question. I'd say one of the most important tips I give to clients as of late is teaching them the power of recovery. Recovery can mean addressing myofascial adhesions or trigger points with foam rolling or SMR - or it can mean taking days off to allow your muscles to actual repair and rebuild the tissue.
In this day and age (and especially in New York City) people believe in a "go hard or go home" attitude which is true that you need to push your body past the point of overload. But.... you still must allow the tissue to rebuild itself. Taking days off to rest, do light cardio or simple do foam rolling may be the missing element to why your body is plateauing.
And of course as it relates to recovery, is you need to feed your body with the building blocks to actual rebuild and repair. So diet, protein, amino acids are very important.
4. Can you please share any major mistakes that fitness professionals make?
I'd say one of the biggest mistakes that some fitness professionals can make is thinking that you are done learning once you earn the Certificate. We are forever learning and fitness is an industry that is constantly (and rapidly) growing and evolving. This means to stay competitive in the industry you really must attend the Conferences, the new workshops, read blogs and fitness journals.
5. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five and ten years from now?
In the next several years I hope to see the Evidence Based Fitness Academy (EBFA) continue to grow and further spread the power of barefoot science and from the ground up training within the fitness industry.
We have many great collaborations in the works with major health club chains both in the USA and Internationally. Having our education implemented into their trainers formal education will take this from the ground up concept to the next level.
In addition we are working on product development. So in the next several years I hope to see a new surface created for clients and athletes which is targeted at better foot activation and barefoot stimulation.
