Hello Everyone,

Kindly let me share this with you:

"At least one billion people are undernourished while a staggering 1.5 billion people are overweight, including an increasing number in low and middle income countries," World Disasters Report-2011 by International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies stated. http://www.dnaindia.com/health /report_excessive-nutrition-ki lling-more-people-than-hunger_1590241

This report should be of value to professionals and business owners in health and fitness in India to motivate people in India to focus on their health and fitness. I'll keep sharing reports and articles of value.

  • Ahead of monetary policy review on January 29, RBI governor D Subbarao today spoke of poverty and high food inflation in remarks interpreted as dashing hopes of a rate cut later this month.

He said lower segments of the society, which spend a greater proportion of their budgets on food, were more concerned about high food inflation.

"We need to improve our understanding of the poor and poverty," Subbarao said in his introductory remarks at the first 'Suresh Tendulkar Memorial Lecture' here.

Subbarao praised late economist Suresh Tendulkar's study of poverty and estimation of people below poverty line (BPL) which displayed his "sensitivity and empiricism" on the issue.

Noted economist Abhijit Banerjee, currently Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, delivered the lecture on the topic, 'Identifying the Poor'.

  • Central obesity (potbelly), BMI (body mass index) of more than 23 and alcohol were found to be risk factors for hypertension. High prevalence, low awareness, low treatment rates, and poor control among those under treatment in the rural areas make hypertension an ‘emerging public health challenge’ that can increase the rates of mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular diseases, the study noted.

Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur, the first author of the study and a Scientist at the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai says that one of the major findings of the study is that about 75 per cent of people with hypertension were ignorant of their condition and ignorance was more in the younger age group. This could be because younger people are less likely to suffer from major illnesses and hence less likely to visit doctors and doctors too don’t expect younger people to be hypertensive and suffer from lifestyle diseases, she said.

    Shakti --

It is a distinct honour to write to you for the first time as Executive Director of the World Food Programme.

I’m a firm believer that our past paves the way for our future. Growing up in Chicago, my family and I saw poverty and hunger in our own community. Despite this, my parents strongly believed that situations should not limit opportunities. Through their support and sacrifice, they made sure that my sisters and I were empowered through education.

This is exactly what WFP is making possible for millions of families around the world through school meals programmes. What a privilege it is for me to now be at the helm of this outstanding organization -- the largest humanitarian organization in the world.

Having served as the United States Ambassador to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture since 2009, I have watched WFP become an increasingly innovative agency. This has enabled us to not only reach more of the world’s hungry but also to cultivate an ever-growing community of supporters such as you dedicated to giving a hand up to families and communities who need us the most.

You should feel proud of the impact you have made in the fight against hunger. And I feel confident that together we will continue to increase our impact, reaching more and more of the world’s most vulnerable men, women, and children.

I truly believe that hunger is our world’s greatest solvable problem. By working together, we can give more children the future they deserve and more communities the support they need to pull themselves out of the cycle of hunger.

We have our work cut out for us, but I look forward to updating you from time to time on our progress.

    Warmly yours,

    Hello Josette,

Congratulations on your new position! I wish that you would continue making lasting positive difference in the lives of many.

I've mentioned about WFP in my most recent comment on http://www.healthfitnessindia.com/profiles/blogs/at-least-1-billion... and that I welcome you to the Health and Fitness India network if you like. Every time I cough and that I've been doing so regularly which I think is due to high pollution around me, I want to make aware the masses that how much negatively the pollution affects all of us. When I was in the States, I used to breathe a lot more deeply which I'm unable to where I stay in India. An American Council on Exercise (ACE) gym trainer recently told me that I breathe very deeply including through my mouth when I exercise which he mentioned to be great for fitness, however, he also mentioned that the pollution is so high that the pollutants can go very deep into my lungs. I realize that my productivity has gone significantly down over the years since I've been in India which I also think due to affects of pollution on me. Every time I learn of food adulteration around me, I want to make the masses aware of the same. I think that people might do negative things also because they might not realize the full implications of their actions and that I also think that much can be improved by making them highly aware of the negative impact of their actions.

I do wish that my email would make it to you and that I would also be able to connect with you more directly including to learn even better from you on how to contribute like the best.

Thank You again for sharing with me and our community! I look forward to continuing being inspired by your contributions.

    Best Regards,
    Shakti Saran

    Shakti --

There are no words to describe the respect, admiration, and affection I have for the WFP online community. It has been my honour to have worked alongside you for the past 4 ½ years, fighting hunger in increasingly innovative and effective ways.

Today I wanted to write to each of you to tell you personally that I will be departing the World Food Programme at the end of my term this month to assume Vice-Chairmanship of the World Economic Forum.
I have long believed that solving hunger and helping countries achieve food security is the work of our time. What has struck me during my tenure with WFP is just how many people like you share this vision. Our online community has grown by leaps and bounds, with more than 800,000 individuals now committed to taking action against hunger.

The impact of this commitment has never been more evident. Last year, when we brought to your attention the life and death situation unfolding in the Horn of Africa, you responded – and responded in a big way. In the first two months, you contributed enough to ensure more than 340,000 women and children had the food they needed to survive the coming month.

We have seen the power of the internet in galvanizing people from across the globe to take action. Please never forget that every action you take, no matter how small it may seem to you, will make a lasting difference in the life of someone on the frontlines of hunger.

What a privilege it has been to have made that difference with you these past few years.

Leaving something we love is always difficult. But I truly believe that WFP has never been stronger in its strategic path. And I look forward to watching this community continue saving lives in emergencies, ensuring more children receive a nutritious meal at school, and giving more families a way out of hunger.

Working together, we are a beacon of hope for the world’s hungry who look to us to help break the cycle of hunger and malnutrition.

I will continue to fight for the vulnerable people throughout the world, and I hope you will continue to keep these men, women, and children in your hearts and minds.

    With deepest gratitude,

    Josette Sheeran

  • Today I told a girl who's doing well professionally to also care for her health and fitness including because otherwise what she would earn would unnecessarily also go towards doctors and medicines and that much worse than that she would also not do as well personally which she could've done by having nice health and fitness. I also told her that a nice health and fitness also helps mental activities and that she does PHD level studying and work. Some different people have told me that they've known doctors at a personal level who've told them that they get unhappy when people and/or their general environment are doing well because that would reduce their business. I'm sure that there're nice doctors also, however, why go to doctors by creating lifestyle related health problems. Moreover, given the amount of fraud in India including possibly having several fake doctors, it's better to avoid them at least by avoiding lifestyle related health problems. Best! Shakti Saran

  • http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2012/04/20/indias-... India’s City Dwellers at Greater Risk Than Americans for Heart Disease:

“India has the dubious distinction of being known as the coronary and diabetes capital of the world,” Prakash Deedwania, of the University of California, San Francisco and co-author of the report, said in a prepared statement.

Across the country about 79 percent of men and 83 percent of women didn’t get much exercise, and 41 percent of men and 45 percent of women were overweight or obese, the team found. And high-fat, low-fruit-and-vegetable diets were common. All of these trends put people at higher odds for developing—and dying from—cardiovascular disease.
