A sore throat is a condition that causes pain or burning sensation in the throat. The sore throat becomes worse when swallowing food. The most common cause of a sore throat is viral infection pharyngitis such as a cold or flu. However, a sore throat caused by the virus is cured on its own. Strep throat (streptococcal infection), a less common sore throat, is caused by bacteria. This condition requires treatment with antibiotics to prevent complications of a sore throat. Additionally, other rare cases of sore throat require more difficult treatment.
