Dementia is a composite term for diseases and conditions caused by a decline in memory, language, problem-solving, and other thinking skills that affect a person's ability to perform everyday activities. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia. It is a type of mental illness. Some types of this disease are cured on their own and treatment for some types is required. Apart from this, Alzheimer's is a disease whose treatment is not available but they do treatment to reduce its symptoms.
Some of the following measures can be taken to prevent dementia.
- Do not smoke and use alcohol.
- Atherosclerosis (heart disease that makes the arteries narrow).
- High levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein).
- Above-average blood levels of homocysteine (a type of amino acid).
- Control of diabetes.
